Oh yes.... My Mom was starting to cook some french fries put a pan of oil on stove.. we had company that day and the oil got over heated caught on fire... the gentleman who was visiting freaked out and threw water on it there was lots of smoke damage only..[Diane]

Just my two cents.... I don't know how it worked... but I remember we had a fire in the kitchen..... the fire department was there to put it out in a flash... [Diane]

It would depend on how well the county and city stations work together. Normally the closest engine in the county would be the first one dispatched. If the second nearest county engine was far away, the city would probably be called to assist if they were closer. Al, I did a little research and there are currently about nine fire stations within 2-3 miles of Berendo and 112th. Go to "www.berendo.net" and click on the photo to enlarge it. The big green "X" is Berendo and 112th. I don't know which would respond after the 108th and Normandy station did. My guess is those along 108th st. Maybe one of you retired fireman might know. There are 3 of you on the list. :-) That would be current strategy of course. How the old 1950s era setup would have worked might be very difficult to find out. - Johnny

It wasn't very clear but the newer station near Washington HS at 108th and Normandy is called station 14. Al, you said there was no station there before the new one was built. You're probably right. I got lucky though and found a web page that talks about old station 14. Turns out that it was on Century east of Normandy. The web page has a very nice little story about it and describes the stations service area as going from 88th street to El Segundo and from Vermont to Denker (Wash. HS west boundary). This firehouse topic is moving fast! Anyway, the Sanborn maps are available online at the LAPL website, under the "Databases" button to the left (S for Sanborn). But you have to have a city libes card. I'm going to go up there from work tomorrow and get one. (I know I'll do this, because it's an unimportant errand, and I've always been very good about those.) Maybe one of you already has a card. I gotta believe those maps show every firehouse! Sudden thought (Really, they're all sudden, when you think about it): Do firehouses have fire insurance?

I had forgotten about the fire at the lumber company --- But I do remember it well, The whole neighborhood heard the sirens and immediately we saw the flames -- all in the middle of the night. We had a very good, long-time friend who worked there. I phoned him and he went to be there, and called the owner, too.

I am glad to know Julia keeps well and, if I know her !, keeps busy, too. My "busy" anymore is an occasional bout with the computer, and the vacuum and/or dust-cloth.

And of course some simple cooking, since I do like to eat and still have a cast-iron stomach.. I hope. Gardening is confined to dead-heading the white roses under my bay windows. They tend to get an occasional tall "sport" of extraordinary vigor. Alex will chop a few of those for me next week. I am afraid to lean over to cut them - and maybe end up IN THE FLOWER BED.

I think you're right about the immediate neighborhood. I do remember a fire at
H&H Lumber. I recall my dad saying that lumber yards were particularly
susceptible to fires starting because of the quantity of sawdust around the
place. A spark from the saws could land in a pile of sawdust and smolder for a
long time before it flashed.

[BERENDO] Finally - Progress on new Berendo List / Web Page

Hi Gang,

Well, it's taking me long enough, but finally things are moving toward a new
list server and a new web page. As you can tell, I gave up on the Facebook idea.
Mainly I felt that there would be to many distractions from our subject of
interest, that is, reminiscing about the old Berendo neighborhood.

So what I'd like to try first is changing our list server from Rootsweb to
Google groups. There won't be much of a change in appearance with that. Later,
I'll bring the new web page on-line.

In the next week you will be getting email about being a new member of the new
Google group, so be looking for that. Once you get the introductory email,
you'll be able to email to the group as before. Meanwhile, I won't be shutting
down the old list until every thing is in place for the new scheme. So If
someone forgets and emails the old list, the message will still get through.

I'm hoping that the new set up will get us re-interested in our old haunts and
give us much enjoyment remembering our childhood haunts.

An aside to that "rusty chevy" story has to do with my stay in Minnesota for about 8 months. You may know that in those areas many people will keep there regular car in the garage all winter. They buy a "winter beater" to use during the bad months. That "winter beater" is usually an older car that has seen better days body-wise but is still in good mechanical condition. I bought an old Datsun thinking I was going to have to winterover in Minnesota. I bought a new battery and replaced the old rusted out floor pan under the driver's side. After getting it all fixed up I learned that I would be sent back home. The good part was I was able to sell the car back to the guy I'd bought it from. After seeing how I'd improved the car, he said to come back and buy the car anytime I wanted.

Wish my 1950 Chevy had been stainless steel. I bought it in 1956 for
$500 hard earned dollars. It must have belonged to someone from the
hard winter states. It was very rusted on the underside. Probably
from driving on salt treated winter roads. I didn't have enough sense
in those days to do a thorough check on the condition of a used car.
I just saw this shiny metalic kelly green convertible and fell in love
with it. It was sitting on a used car lot over on Figueroa and it
looked so great under the lot's night lighting. (Another thing you
shouldn't do is buy a car at night.) I kept it up until about 1961
and then abandoned it to the junk yard. Today I try to keep my cars
for around ten years and they're still in pretty good shape when I
give them up.

Mike Dumas pointed out that we had a fire right on our block. The Chenier's house caught fire when a floor re-finishing project went awry. Fortunately no one was in the house. For a while, until their house was restored, the Cheniers stayed across the street with the... Wombleys?. In this case the house didn't burn to the ground and just a lot of interior rework put the house back into shape for living in.

Does any one recall any fires in our neighborhood. The only one I can recall right now was a fire at H&H Lumber on Vermont and 112th Street.

Wow! Just a piece of rope. Yet so much fun to play with. An inspiration to
budding poets. A motivation to exercise without hardly knowing it. And so
portable. I'm sure the children's shoe companies love them. Did the shoe
companies ever give out free jump ropes with their logos on the handles?

Hey there,
I only got 5 years on Berendo, but I remember them pleasantly -- and
everything a lot bigger than it looks in the photos now. Did we all
live in that tiny house?
I loved jump-roping. In my time we only had 24 robbers knocking at the
door -- inflation I guess.
Here's another one:
Blondie and Dagwood went to town
Blondie bought an evening gown
Dagwood bought the Evening News
And this is what it said: one...two...three...four [count jumps til you miss]

Thanks, Al. I do remember "Spanish Dancer", now that I see it, but I didn't remember it as part of the "robbers" bit. I was hoping one of the girls (Can I say that?) would add a couple tidbits. I know there must be hundreds of jump-rope rhymes, but the ones we actually heard on the block would pack that nostalgic punch. For that, we need girls. As creatures of few words, we boys mostly just said, "I got you! You're dead! Lie down!"
