Dumas Brothers visit Karen Chenier Chapman

Dumas bothers and Karen Chenier Chapman at Karen's home on Marrowstone Island in Puget Sound Washington. (LR: Tony, Karen, Dave, Mike, Johnny) Sept. 29,2014

Hi Berendo Gang,  My brothers and I have an annual road trip outing.  This year we visited the Northwest and had the wonderful opportunity to visit one of our Berendo friends in her home near Port Townsend.  Karen gave us a great tour of her house and invited us to stay overnight there.  In addition, she put together two delicious meals for us.  Best bed and breakfast of our trip :-) Thanks also to Judy for helping get these photos to me via email.  We had very nice chat with Judy at Karen's via Skype.  - Johnny Dumas

Before television, there was radio...

Email from Al Magdaleno On Wed, Jun 11, 2014:

"[At this link: http://www.dumb.com/oldtimeradio/] there's an unbelievable collection of all the old time radio shows. Find your favorite, click on it, and listen to all the episodes."

I sure remember some of these. Hadn’t heard the Whistlers whistle for about 60 years, but still remembered how it went after hearing a few notes. And the squeaking door in Inner Sanctum. - Alex

Hi Al,
Thanks for posting this.  I didn't know so many of those old shows were recorded.   I used to listen to many of those programs, starting with Tom Mix (that one didn/t make it on the list  ) and probably ending with Gun Smoke. Palidin seems to be missing also.  Jack, Doc and Reggie!  Those were the characters in "I love a mystery".   This show played after bed time.  I don't remember what time it was but it seemed like midnight to me.  The room was dark and only the sound of the radio could be heard.  It got very scary at times.

Our old console radio looked something like the picture above. This particular radio was a
Silvertone Model 4485 Console Radio produced in 1937 the year I was born.  It was the center of attention most evenings after dinner at our house.

Thanks again for the link.

Slide show in memory of Marla Magdaleno

From Alex to the Berendo gang:

For those who could not be there, here is the slide show.

Marla - We will miss you greatly.

From Alex Magdaleno to the Berendo gang:

It is with great sadness we inform you that after a long illness Marla passed away on April 28th.  Marla was born in Los Angeles August 9, 1940.  The Berendo gang has always felt like our extended family and I am sure Marla could remember everyone's birthday to the end.  She often talked about her wonderful memories of the neighborhood.  We all have played cards with her or been teased by her at one time or other.  To the end she remained outgoing and strong-willed and handled her infirmities with great courage.  She loved chatting with people, playing games and traveling (not hiking!).  For many years she lived independently in her own apartment in Port Hueneme and the past 14 years had her own bedroom in a group home in Granada Hills where she charmed the staff with her spunk.

We plan to hold a memorial celebrating her life in Camarillo and will provide details later.  In lieu of flowers you may honor Marla's memory with donations to the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, address: 6430 Independence Ave, Woodland Hills 91367

Intersting life of someone from the old neighborhood.

Herbie Worthington III
Herbie moved to 112th as a young teen about 1959. He lived in the duplex on the first alley South of our house next to Mrs Sideners two story.
I knew him and sometimes hung around with him till Elma and I moved out of the area. We lost contact for many years, but I looked him up about 10 years ago.

It was the beige one across the alley. Now that I see it, it was two separate buildings on the same narrow lot. Bob Boney lived in the  house you circled.

Hi Al,
Thanks for the correction.  I've attached a Google maps view of that alley intersection with 112th and circled the duplex I think your referring to.  Is that the right one? - Johnny<Berendo & 112th B.jpg>

Hi Johnny,

Actually, I meant East. It was on the North side of 112th. My mistake.
I supplied the pictures of him with his cars and in his garage.

Hi Al,
Thanks for sharing the info on Herbie.  I'm a little confused as to where he lived.  You said in the duplex on the first alley south of your house, but south of your house would be in the direction of Imperial Hwy.  Did you mean first alley West of your house?

Rudy Lara - RIP 12/29/2013

Ted and Rudy Lara (ca 1950s)

No, it would have been closer to 1950 if he was 8. I don't know how many older brothers he had but it was a bunch. I'll check with Rudys' son soon. The father's name was Theodore so I bet one son was junior. And I think there also may be an Ed. - Al

Hi Al,
You sent us some photos of the Laras in 2000 and I posted them at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jdumas/berendo//AlTrip050800.html .  The eleventh picture down on that web page shows Ted (in sailor uniform) and Rudy.  Rudy looks to me to be about 8 or 9 years old.  If Ted was a sailor, would that have been late WWII years?  A couple of photos down further is a picture of "Ed" Lara which I'm guessing might have been Ted at a younger age. Comment?

Just that they were there before about 1920. Rudy's grandfather  Lara was a stone mason and built the house, probably with  his brothers help.
Some time in the 40's they built the house in the back where Rudy was raised. I assume they rented out the front house after the grandparents died.
The also owned the corner lot that was empty for many years. I forget if he said there once was a house there before Imperial was widened.

Thanks Al,
Do you know anything of the history of the Lara house?

He was my age, 71.  He was the last Lara to live in the area. His son will stay in the house long enough to sell it.  Two of Rudy's much older brothers are still alive but don't live in the neighborhood.
