Re: The Newsome Store

Thanks Al for all the good info.  We're putting together kind of a family history timeline and want to include significant changes or happenings to the old neighborhood.  These little details are just fun and a challenge to discuss when we get together.

I remember about 3 accidents on the corner of Berendo & 112th street.  The first one occurred when I was in the first or second grade.  That one involved us.  My mother was driving us to Woodcrest and got hit by a fast driving kid as she crossed 112th going north on Berendo.  The other two you have pictures of and we can probably nail down the dates on those by guessing how old the kids in the pictures are.

Hope all is well with you and Elma and your boys families.

I found more pictures of the work on the property. It was 1945.

Thanks again Al,
One more for you:   When did your Garner grandparents build their house on 112th and Budlong?  In your picture of Russell and your grandfather in front of the newly broken retaining wall where the garage would be built has Russell looking about 17 or 18.  That would put the time at about 1948 if Russell was born in 1930.  What do you think?

I can't remember for sure what she said. I think it was late 30's but not sure. Cathy say the Baxters were running the store about 1950 when she first was allowed to go there by herself. She thinks the Pearsons were running it at the time Russel and his wife were living in the little house on the other side of the store. That was about 1952. Some time after that my cousin Douglas and his wife rented that house.

Thanks Al,
Do you recall hearing from your folks or others when the Newsoms opened the store.  In the 30's?

Hi Johnny, I will forward this to Cathy and see if she knows any more than I do. The Pearsons were running it when David worked there so  he can give you an approximate date. Russel Garner ran into the Baxters when he moved to Sunnymead in 56 so they were out of there by then at the latest.
Elma and I moved out of the neighborhood in 68 and the store was still there but I don't remember for sure who ran it. I seem to remember that someone else ran it after the Pearsons and they had to close it because the kids who moved into the area were always stealing from them.
The Baxters probably took over after Mr. Newsom died. I could find no record of his death. I did find him on the 1930 and 1940 census.

Hi Al,
Mike and I were talking about the old Newsome store yesterday and we got to wondering what the timing of the various owners was.

Can you recall.  When we moved to Berendo in 1941, Newsome was running the store.  Later in the 40s I think, the Baxters took over.  Then later Pearson ran the business.   Can you come up pretty close to the exact years?

Also, were there other owners after Pearson and when did the store close for good?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Johnny
