Just for opportunity I assume. Both the Hernandez family and then Porfitio first went to Texas.

Thanks Al for your recollections of your dad's family history.Any idea how the Magdalenos came to be in Yuma?Johnny--On Fri, Aug 30, 2024 at 3:16 PM Alex Magdaleno <eng42b@gmail.com> wrote:Dad didn't write any memories. I'll add what I can from memory and research.Edward H Magdaleno was born in 1909, the 5th child and 5th boy of 12 children to Porfirio Cipriano Magdaleno and Adelaida Hernandez Magdaleno in Yuma Arizona. His dad could not speak much English. His mom could speak and write both Spanish and.English.I assume Spanish was spoken in the home and the children probably spoke a lot of English among themselves. Adelaida did not like the heat in Yuma and starting around 1910 started spending summers in Corona CA at her sister's property. After that sister died in 1917, Adeleaida would rent homes in LA in the summertime. Eddie said he used to work on a horse drawn grocery wagon in the area when they lived there, about 1921 Eventually she bought the house on Berendo where she could spend summers and the older boys could live there year around and go to trade school. Ed started living at the berendo house full time and going to Woodcrest. When he graduated Woodcrest there was no highschool nearby and he moved back to Yuma and went to Yuma High through the 11th grade. When he heard that Washington High was opening in 27 he moved back to Berendo for his final year.Dad did not get good grades. I think he had ADHD like me, but he liked school, taking part in plays, glee club and especially sports. It was in print in his Yuma yearbook that he was the best tennis player on the team. And one of his friends from Washington was on the football team with him and said he scored a lot of touchdowns. From the writing his his washington yearbook i can see he was real popular, especially with the girls. His dad worked at the roundhouse for the railroad, running the steam plant.Their house was right across the street from the area where cattle were kept prior to being shipped out. He ran a water line under the dirt road to his property and had the only running water in the area. They had a large garden and the biggest house. Aunt Hope told me they often had funerals at their house because they had room for lots of people.Across from the block behind them, was a big hill. Sometimes the young men would serenade the young women who lived below. When it got late one night Porfirio yelled to them to be quiet. They yelled back "Viejo, no te cantamos". "Old man, we are not singing to you".--On Fri, Aug 30, 2024 at 1:52 PM John Dumas <jdumasfelix@gmail.com> wrote:Hi Al,As always that was a great read.
