Ed started living at the berendo house full time and going to Woodcrest. When he graduated Woodcrest there was no highschool nearby and he moved back to Yuma and went to Yuma High through the 11th grade. When he heard that Washington High was opening in 27 he moved back to Berendo for his final year.

Dad did not get good grades. I think he had ADHD like me, but he liked school, taking part in plays, glee club and especially sports. It was in print in his Yuma yearbook that he was the best tennis player on the team. And one of his friends from Washington was on the football team with him and said he scored a lot of touchdowns. From the writing his his washington yearbook i can see he was real popular, especially with the girls.

His dad worked  at the roundhouse for the railroad, running the steam plant.Their house was right across the street from the area where cattle were kept prior to being shipped out. He ran a water line under the dirt road to his property and had  the only running water in the area. They had a large garden and  the biggest house. Aunt Hope told me they often had funerals at their house because they had room for lots of people.

Across from the block behind them, was a big hill. Sometimes the young men would serenade the young women who lived below. When it got late one night Porfirio yelled to them to be quiet. They yelled back "Viejo, no te cantamos". "Old man, we are not singing to you".

Thanks to your mom for taking the time to do what few parents do.  Her family really got around the West Coast! Except for the Sixties, I've spent most of my waking hours within a stone's throw of Imperial Highway. My epitaph: "Can I try that again?"

Al, Thanks for your mom's account of  her and your dad's life experiences. I found it very interesting. I didn't realize Russell had children.

It does raise a lot of questions in my mind about details left out and happenings in between what your mom mentioned.  In some cases, she may have wanted to keep the account on the happy side, which I believe our lives on Berendo were, generally,  Thanks to our parents and neighbors. She didn't mention Theron for example, which she might not have considered a Berendo thing. Your Dad being in one of the first classes at Washington High  would be an interesting addition. Etc.  I would like to know more about your Dad's family's origins in Yuma or wherever.   How was it that your Mom and Dad eventually wound up with your family house.  Did it originally belong to your Dad's parents or someone else in the Magdaleno family.    Wasn't the house originally a real estate office that was moved to Berendo and converted into a home?

All the parents after the war were in the Woodcrest PTA or West Athens and we all attended the meetings in the auditoriums.

Our neighborhood was like millions of other patriotic families back during the war years and afterwards,

Up on the top of the hill we played Kick the can, red river, hud and seek, had b b guns, then we had massive dirt clod fights with our neighbors across the street whose dad was a animal doctor.

Oh so much to tell people what growing up in south LA WAS ALL ABLUT.

John Wayne's cousin lived further down in Betendo near West Athens school his name was Joe Signs.  His son accidental was shot in military training.

John came to our house several times to dance while making movies.

All the families knew (Avie). My mothers name was Avonelle 

All the parents after the war were in the Woodcrest PTA or West Athens and we all attended the meetings in the auditoriums.

Our neighborhood was like millions of other patriotic families back during the war years and afterwards,

Up on the top of the hill we played Kick the can, red river, hud and seek, had b b guns, then we had massive dirt clod fights with our neighbors across the street whose dad was a animal doctor.

Oh so much to tell people what growing up in south LA WAS ALL ABLUT.

Dave and Pam were returning home from a trip to South Dakota.  They stopped at an Idaho gas station to get gas.  David Dobbins was a customer there and started up a conversation with my brother.  Dave asked Dobbins where he was raised and that led to the discovery that Dobbins originally lived on Berendo south of Imperial.  Dobbins now lives in Coeur D'alene Idaho.

It's curious that I never knew of Dobbins.  I guess my world was smaller than I thought 😉.

Here's what he said when I asked him how our parents knew each other.------

Back in the 1940s our parents were neiborhood Watch called civil defense.  They wore whit military hats had black out curtains on every window.

Most of our neighbors worked at Douglas aircraft in one form or another from machinists to drivers to riveters like the movie Swing Shift.

My parents small house at the top of the hill had block parties served coffee doughnuts and bar b ques.  Our living room floors and dining room had hardwood finished floors covered with oriental are rugs.

When the evening shifts were over a lot of aircraft workers wives and hubbies came to our house to dance into the early dawn with the large RCA RADIO GLARING Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.
