Re: Berendo neighbor

Could it be Avonelle was part of the "Hen Party" (stitch 'n' chat) group that your mom and mine were going to when you and I were in kindergarten? (One year, for Christmas, they fixed up the girls' old love-worn dolls. You know, like how they beautified the lion, the tin man and the scarecrow after they gained entrance to Mario Lanza's Oz.)  That would explain why I'd likely hear her mentioned now and then.

My parents small house at the top of the hill had block parties served coffee doughnuts and bar b ques.  Our living room floors and dining room had hardwood finished floors covered with oriental are rugs.

When the evening shifts were over a lot of aircraft workers wives and hubbies came to our house to dance into the early dawn with the large RCA RADIO GLARING Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.

John Wayne's cousin lived further down in Betendo near West Athens school his name was Joe Signs.  His son accidental was shot in military training.

John came to our house several times to dance while making movies.

All the families knew (Avie). My mothers name was Avonelle

All the parents after the war were in the Woodcrest PTA or West Athens and we all attended the meetings in the auditoriums.

Our neighborhood was like millions of other patriotic families back during the war years and afterwards,

Up on the top of the hill we played Kick the can, red river, hud and seek, had b b guns, then we had massive dirt clod fights with our neighbors across the street whose dad was a animal doctor.

Oh so much to tell people what growing up in south LA WAS ALL ABLUT.

Hi Al,
Dave described the market as pretty upscale.  I can't verify the date of your original post of the Palos Verdes trip.   My guess is late 90s early 2000s.

About 1954, some of us decided to see it we could make it to Palos Verdes on our bikes. I think the riders were Dave, Larry, Mike Chenier and I. Larry had one of those English racing bikes with three speeds. Unfortunately, his shifter was broke so he had to ride all the way in low gear. The only time he had an advantage was on the hills and we didn't come to many hills till we actually got to the bottom of Palos Verdes. We went straight out Western Avenue to Palos Verdes Drive. We turned right and had quite a climb from there. We continued on to Via Campesina I believe. It started downhill and we got to go real fast. There was a big S curve and I remember getting a high speed shimmy while going around the corner. What a thrill! We stopped in the little village center there where the fountain is. At the Market we bought some big Navel oranges. They sure tasted great. We left from there on Palos Verdes Blvd. I don't know what route we took home from there. When we got home, we calculated that we had traveled about 40 miles. I don't think we took any patches or tools with us. I guess we just trusted to luck. It was a lot of fun, but we never did it again. I do remember a few rides to Hermosa beach with Larry and Danny Leftault, around 1956. Not fun riding home with sand in your trunks.(:-)

Re: Bike ride to Palos Verdes

Inspired by this textbook specimen of a hairpin, I wondered if bobby pins are still in use, because I don't find them lying around the schoolyard like we used to, possibly because I attend school now only in terrifying dreams.  But we live in extreme times:

Yup, still in use.
